Best Registered Agent Services for LLCs in 2026: I Compared the Leading Options

Every LLC generally needs a registered agent in its formation state. Here is how the leading national services compare—and why the answer differs for an existing LLC and a business that has not formed yet.

A registered agent receives service of process and important state or legal correspondence for the LLC. The agent must maintain a physical address in the applicable state and generally be available during normal business hours.

You can often serve as your own agent, but many owners use a commercial service for privacy, convenience, continuity and prompt document handling. A service does not eliminate every public disclosure: states may separately request principal-office, mailing, organizer, member or manager information.

Best registered agent for an existing LLC

Northwest Registered Agent

$125/year

Northwest currently charges $125 per year and says it has not raised its registered-agent price in 20 years. That pricing history is one reason I like Northwest for ongoing service.

  • Established nationwide registered-agent provider
  • Same-day local scanning and secure online access
  • Privacy-oriented model and straightforward pricing
  • Strong value for an existing LLC or an owner leaving a higher-priced provider

Northwest vs. Bizee Registered Agent: Which Is Better?

If You're Forming a New LLC

Both include the first year with qualifying formation. Compare overall fees, documents, support and recurring services. Northwest is not automatically better merely because its later agent price is lower.

If You Already Have an LLC

Northwest is my current preference. Its $125/year price compares with Bizee's current $149/year. Northwest's agent focus, privacy orientation, local scanning and 20-year price history make it my preferred ongoing value. Bizee remains a strong formation option.

EXISTING LLC OWNERS

Already Have a Registered Agent? You Can Switch

An LLC is generally not permanently tied to its original agent. If you pay $149, $199, $249 or more each year, compare that cost and service with Northwest's current $125 price.

  1. Select the new registered agent.
  2. Obtain any required consent.
  3. File the state's agent/address change.
  4. Pay any state filing fee.
  5. Keep the old service until the new agent appears in state records.

Procedures and fees vary by state. Changing the agent generally does not change ownership, tax classification or business structure.

The no-fee option

Can I Be My Own Registered Agent?

In many states, an owner may serve if the statutory requirements are satisfied: typically a qualifying physical location in the state and reliable availability during normal business hours.

POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES

No commercial-agent fee

Self-service can be simple for an owner with a stable qualifying location.

POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES

Public address and limited flexibility

The address generally becomes public; service may occur there; moving can require a filing; and absences can create risk.

A service can improve continuity and separate the registered-office field from your home, but it does not keep your home off every filing. Read the LLC privacy guide.

Do not confuse the two

Registered Agent vs. Virtual Office

A registered agent receives service of process and official correspondence. A virtual office is intended for ordinary business mail and may include phone service, workspace, meeting rooms or office documentation. An LLC may benefit from both.

Why it is my ongoing pick

Why I Prefer Northwest for Ongoing Service

The recommendation rests on a practical combination: the current $125 annual price, the company's 20-year price-history statement, nationwide offices, privacy practices, same-day scanning, online access and a business centered on registered-agent work. This is not a promise that the price can never change.

Common questions

Registered Agent FAQs

What is the best registered agent for an LLC?+

For an existing LLC, my current recommendation is Northwest because of its $125 annual price, registered-agent focus, privacy orientation and long pricing history. For a new LLC, compare Northwest and Bizee because both currently include the first year with qualifying formation service.

How much should a registered agent cost?+

Major national services in this comparison renew from about $125 to $249.99 per year. Focus on the normal renewal price, not merely a discounted first year.

Is Northwest Registered Agent really $125 per year?+

Northwest currently advertises registered-agent service at $125 per year and says it has not raised that price in 20 years. That history is useful, but it is not a guarantee that pricing can never change.

Is Bizee registered agent service free?+

Bizee currently includes the first year free when it forms the business. Continued or standalone service is currently $149 per year.

Can I change my LLC's registered agent?+

Yes. You generally appoint the new agent and file the state's change form, with any required consent and filing fee. Procedures vary by state.

Does changing my registered agent affect my LLC?+

It generally does not change the LLC's ownership, tax classification or business structure. It changes who receives official documents.

Can I be my own registered agent?+

In many states, yes, if you have a qualifying physical address in the state and are reliably available during normal business hours.

Can I use a registered agent address as my business address?+

Do not assume so. Registered-agent service is designed for official correspondence. Ordinary address use depends on the provider and the particular filing, bank or agency.

Does a registered agent receive regular mail?+

Generally, no. Use a business-address or virtual-office service for ordinary mail when needed.

Do I need a registered agent in every state?+

An LLC generally needs one in its formation state and in each additional state where it registers as a foreign LLC.

My recommendation

Use the choice that matches where you are now.
